When the water rises, UVA is helping communities prepare

Southwest Virginia is no stranger to flooding. In 2024, Hurricane Helene was a devastating reminder. UVA research assistant professor Majid Shafiee-Jood from UVA’s Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering is working with decision makers in Virginia’s Wise County to make their community safer from the impacts of major weather events. Combining advanced models and the lived experience of community members, the research team from UVA is helping rural southwest Virginia better prepare for floods and natural disasters.
