Discovery Explains Link Between Post-Surgery Delirium, Dementia

UVA Health researchers have discovered how postoperative delirium may trigger dementia in older patients and identified a potential drug to reverse the underlying brain changes. The study found that anesthesia, surgery, and intensive care stress alter gene activity in aged brains, disrupting memory and sleep regulation. Vorinostat, an FDA-approved cancer drug, reversed many of these harmful changes in mice.
