Poison Centers See Nearly 400% Increase in Liver Injury Calls

A new UVA Health study reveals that calls to poison centers involving liver injuries from medications, supplements, alcohol, and other substances surged nearly 400% between 2000 and 2024. Acetaminophen was the leading cause, with suspected suicide the most common reason for exposure. Alcohol ranked second, with cases rising during the COVID-19 pandemic. Over 80% of cases required inpatient care.

Discovery Explains Link Between Post-Surgery Delirium, Dementia

UVA Health researchers have discovered how postoperative delirium may trigger dementia in older patients and identified a potential drug to reverse the underlying brain changes. The study found that anesthesia, surgery, and intensive care stress alter gene activity in aged brains, disrupting memory and sleep regulation. Vorinostat, an FDA-approved cancer drug, reversed many of these harmful changes in mice.
